Managing catalog status | Active vs Inactive catalog status

All catalogs are by default Active. If a catalog is active, it will show up in search or the users would be able to browse the catalog. 

If you want to discontinue the use of an existing catalog, you can just make it Inactive. This is helpful when the catalog was already used in the purchase orders and can't be deleted.

To make a catalog inactive, uncheck the checkbox under the label "Active"
